Selective Racking or Drive-In: Which Storage System Should You Choose?

When setting up or expanding a warehouse, choosing the right racking system is the single most important decision for your future logistics efficiency. Among the many options, two systems tend to dominate the conversation: conventional (selective) racking and drive-in racking.

Although both store pallets, their design and use cases are opposites. Agir Installation put together this comparison guide to help you decide which system best fits your business needs.

Selective Racking: King of Accessibility

Selective racking is the most common system. It consists of single or back-to-back rows separated by aisles.

How it works:
Forklifts drive through the aisles and can access the front of every single pallet position directly.

The advantages:

  • 100% accessibility: This is its biggest strength. Every pallet is immediately accessible without moving any other goods.
  • Total flexibility: It’s ideal if you’re managing many SKUs and need to pick mixed orders quickly.
  • Lower upfront cost: This is generally the least expensive system to buy and install.
  • Adjustability: Beam levels can easily be adjusted to accommodate pallets of varying heights.

The drawback:

Low storage density: Because it requires so many aisles, selective racking only uses about 40% of floor space for actual storage.

Drive-In Racking: The Density Champion

The drive-in system maximizes space usage by eliminating aisles between rows.

How it works:
Pallets rest on continuous support rails. The forklift operator drives the truck into the racking structure to place or retrieve pallets, pushing them one behind the other.

The advantages:

Maximum density: lets you store up to 75% more pallets than a selective system in the same footprint. It’s perfect for making the most of expensive space like cold storage rooms.
Great for high volumes: This is the ideal solution if you’re storing large quantities of identical products (few different SKUs).

The drawbacks:

LIFO management only: Drive-in works on a “last in, first out” (LIFO) basis. The first pallet loaded at the back of the lane will be the last one out. That makes it a poor fit for highly perishable goods.
Very low selectivity: To reach a pallet at the back, you first have to clear out everything in front of it.
Higher impact risk: Since forklifts drive right into the structure, there’s a greater risk of hitting the uprights. Careful installation and upright protectors are a must.

The Verdict: How Do You Make the Right Choice?

The choice between selective and drive-in comes down to two key factors: how many SKUs you manage and how important your inventory turnover is.

  • Choose selective racking if you’re a distribution centre with many different products, you’re picking mixed orders, and you need immediate access to your entire inventory.
  • Choose drive-in if you’re a manufacturer producing large batches of identical products, you’re storing seasonal goods, or you’re running commercial freezers where every cubic foot counts.

In many cases, the best solution is actually a hybrid: drive-in for your high-volume, fast-moving products, and selective racking for the rest of your more varied inventory.

If your materials are too long to fit in a standard bay, neither selective nor drive-in will work: check out the Cantilever system for storing long materials. And if this decision is part of a relocation project, take a look at our 5 key steps to a successful warehouse move.

Frequently Asked Questions

What’s the main difference between selective racking and drive-in?

Selective racking offers direct access to 100% of every pallet, while drive-in eliminates aisles to store up to 75% more pallets in the same space, at the cost of LIFO-only access.

Is drive-in racking suitable for perishable goods?

Not really, or only with caution. Drive-in works on a last-in, first-out (LIFO) basis, which isn’t a good fit for highly perishable goods that need strict FIFO rotation.

Can both systems be combined in the same warehouse?

Yes, this is common practice. Many companies use drive-in for their high-volume, fast-moving products and selective racking for the rest of their more varied inventory.
